Cystic Fibrosis Department

Doxiadis Building (Ground Floor)

The Cystic Fibrosis Department has been operating since 1961 and became an independent department within the Greek National Health System (ESY) in 1987. Since then, more than 900 patients have been diagnosed and monitored by the Department.

It is the largest Cystic Fibrosis Center in Greece, providing care and follow-up for approximately 80% of children with cystic fibrosis in the country.

The Department serves as a national reference center for the diagnosis, comprehensive monitoring, and treatment of cystic fibrosis in Greece.

Specialized Services
  • The Department performs sweat chloride testing (sweat tests), the most reliable initial diagnostic test for cystic fibrosis. More than 1,000 tests are conducted annually in patients of all ages, from newborns to adults, as part of the diagnostic evaluation of the disease.

  • Monitoring of infants and children with positive newborn screening results for cystic fibrosis, through the National Newborn Screening Program, as well as those with an uncertain diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (CRMS/CFSPID).

  • Monitoring of children and adolescents with CFTR-related disorders.
Education & Research

The Cystic Fibrosis Department also serves as a training center for postgraduate medical students and nursing students and maintains a significant research and international presence. As part of its educational activities, since 2018 the Department has organized an annual Cystic Fibrosis Conference aimed at educating and informing physicians and other healthcare professionals.
